Power Bike Parade is a bike-powered electronic orchestra that wanders through an area for a few hours and then disappears, encouraging participation along the way. We are demonstrating the use of an alternative power source by converting the kinetic energy of pedaling a bike into electricity used to create a festival of electro-acoustic music and glittering LED lights. Power Bike Parade is an omen of changing relationships to energy as well as a sign to people everywhere that they must do it themselves to reclaim daily life as a venue for expression.

Power Bike Parade takes the everyday act of riding a bicycle, and expands and transforms it into a visual and sonic spectacle, re- appropriating the act as a performance as well as a venue for expression. The bikes will be outfitted with contact microphones and speakers to amplify the sounds the bike makes during a ride, while LED lights will be mounted on the bikes to mimic gestures natural to riding a bike in lights, amplifying and transforming the bike ride itself into a performance. The bike is a traveling venue - a stage is unnecessary - the concert is brought to you. We intend to interact with passers by and people on the street by passing out noisemakers and encouraging them to join the parade. Information will be available to people about how to create their own Power Bike.

Once the parade has ended, the bikes will be ridden back to their place of origin - nothing but the memory of the parade will be left behind. Energy is fluid and changes states, it collects and dissipates, and so will the Power Bike Parade return to a place of rest each week when the ride is over.
